Gensler Delivers Remarks During SEC’s 90th Anniversary ‘Eras Tour’

In remarks delivered via video for the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) 90th anniversary, Chair Gary Gensler detailed the various historical inflection points in securities regulation, and how laws were changed to respond to such events. Chair Gensler noted the dotcom bubble and faulty accounting practices led to Sarbanes-Oxley, as well as the Financial Crisis of 2008 that led to Dodd-Frank and the JOBS Act. He noted that each of these acts of Congress arose out of financial market stressors and changed securities laws to maintain protections for investors and stabilize markets. He noted in the current markets “the world may be changing faster than Taylor’s wardrobe changes on tour,” and emphasized that areas such as “[a]rtificial intelligence, social media, influencers, and a global pandemic” may require similar amendments to securities regulation. Finally, Chair Gensler reinforced the Commission’s three-part mission of protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and ensuring fair, orderly, and efficient financial markets.
