Fuse Research Releases Independent Director Benchmarking Data

Fuse Research released two reports in November as part of its research arm, Business Intelligence for Fund Boards. The two reports include data covering independent director compensation and gender breakdown on boards. The first report covering independent director compensation found that “the smallest cohorts produced the largest compensation variance among independent directors. Directors in the 75th percentile made 5.4x more than those in the 25th percentile for boards with less than $500M and 3.3x more than those in the 25th percentile for boards with $500M to $1B AUM.” The study found that the “compensation for directors within the two largest AUM groups was significantly tighter.” The second study on gender representation on boards found that females accounted for 26% of independent directors. The study also found a correlation between the number of females on a board and AUM noting, “female directors comprise over 38% of independent directors for boards with more than $100B in AUM. Conversely, females account for less than 17% of board directors with less than $1B in AUM.”
