Many funds making investments in European equities have suffered and may continue to suffer discriminatory dividend withholding taxes under European Union law. Since 2009, Boards have approved the payment of fees for US funds to file tax reclaims in Europe to recover these over withheld amounts. And, the stakes are high. Pending reclaims filed on behalf of US funds are estimated to be in excess of 10 billion Euros. Yet, most US funds have not seen repayments to date.
A panel of experts from KPMG's US and UK member firms discussed this complex issue, including an update on significant industry and European developments and a discussion of accounting, disclosure, and taxation challenges. Our speakers were Deanna Flores, Principal and National Tax Leader - Public Investment Management, Christopher Morgan, Partner and Head of European Tax Policy, Brent Oswald, Partner and Chair of AICPA Investment Companies Expert Panel, and David Richardson, Managing Director, International Tax.
The event was broadcasted live from 2:00 to 3:00 Eastern time on Thursday, November, 6, 2014.
