White Clears Initial Hurdle for Senate Confirmation

The Senate Banking Committee has approved the nomination of Mary Jo White to become the next chair of the SEC.  The lone dissenting vote was Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) who wanted to send a message about “Washington’s long-held bias toward Wall Street and its inability to find watchdogs outside of the very industry that they are meant to police.”  The Senator said he will not put a hold on her nomination and that he “[doesn’t] question Mary Jo White’s integrity or skill as an attorney.”  Ms. White is expected to be easily confirmed by the Senate in the upcoming weeks.  Senator Brown has said he will not put a hold on her nomination.
