The November 10 Conference of Fund Leaders (CFL) Roundtable will focus on two topics of interest to independent fund leaders: proxy voting and the impact of the SEC’s recent liquidity proposal.
Ron Gilson, independent chair of American Century Funds Mountain View board, and Zach Oleksiuk, Americas Head, Corporate Governance and Responsible Investment at BlackRock, will discuss how boards organize their proxy voting oversight responsibilities, emphasizing differences between active and index funds.
The second component of the Roundtable will focus on the SEC’s recent liquidity proposal. The proposal would require open-end funds (including open-end ETFs but not money market funds) to adopt liquidity risk management processes and procedures. In addition, funds would be permitted to adopt “swing pricing,” an approach to liquidity management that would permit funds to adjust a fund’s NAV by a set amount during periods of especially large purchases or redemptions. While many fund complexes have processes directed at liquidity risk management, these rules would impose substantial new requirements on the industry and on boards. Charles Rizzo, Chief Financial Officer with John Hancock, will facilitate the conversation with fund leaders to weigh in with their thoughts on this important issue.
The program also will include an “around the table” discussion to allow attendees to discuss other current topics of interest.
The CFL is a unique gathering which provides fund independent chairs and lead independent directors with an opportunity to discuss important issues with other fund leaders. The CFL is a partnership of the Mutual Fund Directors Forum, the Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership at the Columbia Law School, and independent leaders of mutual fund boards of trustees.
